2024 PuppyUp Little Rock Canine Hero
For each PuppyUp Walk, the Event Manager and their Walk Team select both a Human Cancer Hero and a Canine Cancer Hero, to be honored during the Walk ceremonies.
These Heroes are chosen because of their exemplary attitude towards their particular type of cancer, showing bravery and hopefulness in their fight against this terrible disease.
Our Canine Hero for the 2024 Walk is Kevin Caruthers. His photo and story are shown below.
Kevin Caruthers (Labradoodle)
Age 9 (Birthday: July 3, 2015
Kevin is every dog owner’s dream: smart, energetic, friendly, cuddly, and wildly adorable. He’s the Master of Ceremonies, the Chairman of the Board, the social organizer – “Hi! I’m Kevin! Darn glad to meet ya!” is his vibe.
Kevin came to his family at 6 months the week before Thanksgiving. They weren’t looking for a second dog, but he bounded into their path through a friend. He needed a home, and if the older family dog tolerated an energetic puppy, they’d take him in. The minute he walked through the front door they knew he’d never leave. Maxine, his dog sister, allowed him a little space, but dominated him in his every waking moment. He could not have cared less. He made fast friends with his neighbors Molly and Jazz and “The Black Dogs of Cleveland Street” became a raucous beloved crew.
In the Fall of 2023 he developed a noticeable limp in his right foreleg. He stumbled on steps a few times. Oh, it’s arthritis. He’s 8. Pain meds were not helping much. And dog moms know when something isn’t right. The next vet visit confirmed Kevin’s family’s fear: osteosarcoma. Cancer.
After a few days to process the news, research and consult with all of the vets in the practice, the decision was made to remove Kevin’s foreleg and begin chemotherapy. “He’s a young 8!” and “Dogs bounce back so well after an amputation! You will be amazed!’ And that they were.
Kevin’s treatment is going well. His bloodwork looks great! He’s bouncing around the neighborhood chasing rabbits as best he can. It’s a joy to see him hop around the house with his bouncy floppy head. No one really knows what the extended future holds, but Kevin’s immediate future is bright.
Kevin is honored to be a PuppyUp Canine Cancer Hero!
