Human Hero

Human Hero

For each PuppyUp Walk, the Event Manager and their Walk Team select both a Human Cancer Hero and a Canine Cancer Hero, to be honored during the Walk ceremonies.

These Heroes are chosen because of their exemplary attitude towards their particular type of cancer, showing bravery and hopefulness in their fight against this terrible disease.

The Human Cancer Hero for the 2019 PuppyUp Monessen Walk is Norma Rowley. Her story and photo are shown here.

NORMA ROWLEY
My story:
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990 and underwent a lumpectomy, right axillary dissection (lymph node removal), 30 radiation treatments and a 10-year regimen of the drug tamoxafen. In February 2005 an exploratory surgery to remove scar tissue and calcification revealed a cancerous tumor encapsulated in the scar tissue. That diagnosis led to a mastectomy, reconstruction surgery, 30 radiation treatments and a recommended  lifelong regimen of the drug anastrozole. I have now been cancer-free for over 14 years and counting!
I am thankful for each and every day…and for the good health I am blessed with today. I will be 74 years old in May.
I lost my dear Australian Terrier, Rocky to liver cancer in February 2016.
