Canine Hero

Canine Hero

For each PuppyUp Walk, the Event Manager and their Walk Team select both a Human Cancer Hero and a Canine Cancer Hero, to be honored during the Walk ceremonies.

These Heroes are chosen because of their exemplary attitude towards their particular type of cancer, showing bravery and hopefulness in their fight against this terrible disease.

This year’s Canine Cancer Hero is Che. His story of how he was touched by cancer is shown below:

Che will be 11 years old this November.  He is an English bulldog mix, adopted by his daddy when he was 6 years old. Che is a stubborn old mush with a heart of gold. Because of his uncanny ability to tear anything at all apart (toys, cardboard boxes, the floor!), he’s been lovingly nicknamed, Che the Destroyer by family.

We found a mast cell tumor on Che’s testicles about 3 years ago.  Doctor Hernandez and the team at Bellerose Animal Hospital were quick to diagnose it, and quick to remove it. We picked Che up from his neuter expecting an irritable, cranky old man, but instead were greeted by a loving, cuddly, puddle of bulldog. Che healed quickly and was back to causing trouble and ignoring our commands in no time! Sadly, last year, Che was diagnosed with a second mast cell tumor on his spine. Although we were unable to remove this one, Che has maintained his appetite and spunky personality!  We currently cherish every moment with have with this guy, and will continue to do so as long as he wants to stick around.
